What’s Happening?
On Monday, August 5, Hurricane Debby made landfall on the Gulf Coast of Florida as a Category 1 storm. It has since weakened to a Tropical Storm, but it is expected to produce potentially historic rainfall and flooding through Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas over the next few days. Already, the storm has dumped 1.5 feet of rain in Florida, more than a foot in South Carolina and nearly a foot in Georgia.
What are food banks and Feeding America doing?
As the situation evolves, food banks in Florida and up the East Coast will determine the needs of their communities and begin to deploy resources. Already, food banks in Florida have begun limited food distributions to impacted areas. Feeding America has diverted five truckloads of emergency water supplies to food banks in the Carolinas, and expects to expand that distribution throughout Florida and to additional areas as-needed.
