Feeding America statement on the budget resolution

As both chambers of Congress move forward another effort toward passing budget reconciliation legislation, we ask members of Congress to reject any resolution or legislation that threatens funding for federal nutrition programs. Nutrition programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are the most impactful response to food insecurity and are vital for the nearly 50 million people facing hunger in the United States.

Our neighbors facing hunger have shared they want the same things we all want for ourselves – the opportunity to thrive, access to fresh, healthy food, and dignity– but the framework of the current budget resolution would put critical programs in the crosshairs for reductions and will take away food and affordable health care from seniors, children and veterans.

Instead of reducing funding for critical programs like SNAP and Medicaid, we encourage Congress to continue working together to advance a bipartisan farm bill that strengthens federal nutrition programs that help working families put food on their tables. A strong bipartisan farm bill is vital to ensuring more investments in programs to keep food banks stocked with nutritious foods and supporting U.S. farmers and producers who work hard to make sure all families have enough to eat.

With the costs of food and health care out of reach for millions of people, we urge Congress to prioritize healthy, thriving communities by voting against any budget resolution that could lead to funding cuts to SNAP and Medicaid. We stand ready to work with all elected officials to advance policies and programs that will support the nearly 50 million people facing food insecurity in every community in the United States.
