The Director of Branch Operations has overall leadership and responsibility for the budget, staff, and warehouse operations for five branch sites at the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina (Durham, Greenville, New Bern, Sandhills, and Wilmington). The Director of Branch Operations serves as a member of the Operations Leadership team and works collaboratively with colleagues in Food Procurement, Distribution & Inventory Control, Transportation & Workplace Safety, and Facilities Management to ensure innovative, compliant, and effective operations of the five branch sites that deliver 50+ million pounds of food to neighbors in 24 of our 34-county service area. This leader serves as a role model and builds high performing branch teams by engaging with staff in setting organizational goals, managing performance, developing leaders, and celebrating achievements.

Job responsibilities

Leadership (50%)

Contribute to the development and successful implementation of Food Bank’s operational strategies, major projects, organizational environment, and culture.
Serve as a leader on the Warehouse Technology strategic initiative and ensure the successful adoption of new warehouse technology moving the organization to greater organization effectiveness while offering partners greater choice in selecting food.
Oversee management of an operating budget of $1.5 million that includes 5 facilities, a 35 member staff, and equipment.
Assist in identifying and connecting with key stakeholders in the community that will enhance the Food Bank’s mission.
Develop with the team an operational vision for the sites that is reflective of their geographic footprint, partner agency strength in the community, neighbor needs to address food insecurity, volunteer support, donor support, etc.
Lead and develop Operation Managers by offering coaching, guidance, and hands-on support to ensure each site is operating effectively and has the resources needed to meet their goals and metrics.
Host Leadership Team meeting with direct reports and internal partners and ensure cohesive communications and effective implementation of policies, systems, and procedures between all sites and departments.

Operational Effectiveness (50%)

Ensure that all safety policies and procedures are carried out and maintain a safe and accident-free workplace environment.
Ensure all sites are adhering to all Food Safety and Food Bank standard operating procedures (SOPs) and any new procedures or required changes are implemented and adhered to across the sites.
Meet food safety and recordkeeping compliance requirements of the Feeding America contract and support the Director of Food Sourcing & Safety.
Ensure organizational inventory control management is adhered to and support the Director of Distribution & Inventory Control.
Ensure Food Bank warehouse compliance with standards set forth by Feeding America, city, state, federal agencies, and all Food Bank SOPs.
Uphold organizational values and policies and serve as a positive role model to staff. Collaborate with HR on teambuilding and other initiatives to drive employee engagement and a positive workplace experience.
Identify, mentor and develop a diverse team and ensure all HR processes and requirements (Goal Setting, Performance Management, Employee Training and Development) are successfully completed across all sites.

Application qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required in Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, or related field preferred with 10-12 (ten to twelve) years of progressively responsible experience in warehouse operations, logistics planning, inventory control, quality control, and operational safety.

Master's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, or a related field is preferred.

Minimum of 7 (seven) years of people management experience required with a strong track record of building and developing high performing, diverse teams. Must have experience leading teams across multiple sites within a region, district, zone, etc.

Demonstrated experience leveraging technology to improve warehouse/business operations and pursues innovative ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.

Ability to manage and lead teams through change and new technology implementation.

Demonstrated financial acumen with strong budgeting, analytical and problem-solving skills. Uses KPIs or other key metrics to monitor performance against goals and course corrects as needed.

Strong teamwork and collaboration skills and the ability to build relationships internally and externally with key stakeholders.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), with the ability to inspire and empower leaders and teams to succeed.

Must have Valid NC Driver’s license and desire to travel to the five branch sites and engage with the Operations Manager and the staff on a regular basis.

Must believe in the mission of the Food Bank to ensure No One Goes Hungry.

Supervision Exercised:
Provide leadership, direct management, and guidance to 5 Operations Managers and site locations (Durham, Greenville, New Bern, Sandhills, Wilmington).
Coordination and collaboration with other Operations Department Leaders including VP Food Procurement, Director of Distribution & Inventory Control, Director of Transportation & Safety, Distribution Center Manager and Facilities Manager.

Work Environment:
While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to work in an office setting.
Frequently, the employee will be required to drive an automobile, as this position requires significant travel between Food Bank facilities.
The employee will be required to interact with Food Bank employees in the warehouse(s). In doing so, the employee will occasionally be exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
