Stocks, Securities and Mutual Funds
Each year, many of our committed donors support Feeding America with gifts of stock or mutual fund shares. These gifts may enable you to realize tax benefits while giving you the satisfaction of helping the nation's largest and most effective hunger-relief charity.
If you own appreciated securities (stocks, bonds or mutual funds held by you for more than one year), donating them to Feeding America may allow you to reduce or avoid more capital gains taxes and receive a federal income tax charitable deduction.
You can also designate Feeding America as the beneficiary of your securities; please contact your broker for more information about this simple way to support domestic hunger relief.
This type of gift can be especially appealing if you are holding shares that have appreciated significantly in value but yield a low dividend.
If you have a specific question about donating stock or securities, please contact Katie Williams at 1-800-771-2303 x6642.

IRA Rollover
On October 3, 2008, President Bush signed into law the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, which includes an extension of the IRA Charitable Rollover (Tax Extenders and Alternative Minimum Tax Relief Act of 2008, H.R. 1424). The extension is retroactive, applying to distributions made throughout both the 2008 and 2009 tax years. The extension will allow individuals 70 and older to donate up to $100,000 from their IRAs to charities tax-free. The provision expires in December of 2009, but offers new flexibility for giving right now. More Info.

Employee Giving (Donate through Payroll or Workplace Giving Campaigns)
FOR INDIVIDUALS
One of the easiest ways to support Feeding America is through payroll deduction with your employer. Many companies allow their employees to automatically have funds deducted from their paycheck on either a one-time basis or recurring each pay period.
Speak with your Human Resources Department to see if your company has such a program in place. If they do not, consider letting them know that you’re interested. If you gain enough support among your colleagues, they may consider implementing one.If your company doesn’t offer payroll deduction, inquire about whether they run seasonal workplace giving campaigns that they conduct through organizations such as United Way or America’s Charities. This might be another opportunity to designate funds to Feeding America.
If you have additional questions or want to hear more examples of how to start a workplace giving campaign at your place of work please contact Lisa Nelson, Donor Services Manager, at 312.641. 6668 or .
FOR COMPANIES
If you’re organizing a workplace giving campaign at your company, consider these strategies for success:
1. Set a goal with your employees. Establish a dollar goal. How much was raised last year? Try to increase this amount by 10 to 15 percent. You may also consider setting a participation rate—for instance, striving to have 60 percent of employees participating. You’ll find greater success if the employees are engaged in establishing these goals.
2. If your company matches employee gifts don’t forget to tell your team. If your company does not regularly match gifts, consider setting a one-time amount for a specific time period. For example, for every $1 given to Feeding America the company will match up to $25,000. Be sure to announce that employee gifts will be doubled, it usually boosts participation!
3. Establish a campaign committee with staff from each department represented. The staff should be non-management staff and have a wide appeal to peers. This takes the appearance of management pressure out of the process. Some companies also put a steering committee together of management staff to engage their participation as well. The non-management committee is a great leadership and training opportunity and can help put a tremendous amount of energy into your campaign. It also helps take the burden of communication and execution off of a short handed Human Resources department.
4. Have employees who have participated give testimonials. It is better coming from someone considered a peer. We also recommend that the CEO give an endorsement.
5. Stress how easy it is to give via payroll deduction.
6. Establish rewards for participation rates in , such as pizza parties, extra days off, or something of value to your employees.
If you have additional questions or want to hear more examples of how to make your campaign a success, please contact Lisa Nelson, Donor Services Manager, at 312.641.6668.
