Summer is a critical time of need for millions of children who receive free and reduced-price meals during the school year. To address childhood hunger this summer, the Hunger-Free Summer initiative was launched on July 7 through Feeding America’s partnership with the ConAgra Foods Foundation.
Leading the tour is musician and Feeding America Entertainment Council member, Katharine McPhee. During the month of July, McPhee will visit Summer Feeding sites across the country in cities including Orlando, Florida, Little Rock, Arkansas, Irvine, California and Houston, Texas.
During the school year, 19.5 million children receive free and reduced-price meals at school. But in the summer months, only 2.2 million children participate in the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program. That leaves millions of children at risk of hunger during the summer months. The Hunger-Free Summer initiative aims to fill that gap through a $5 million donation to Feeding America over the next five years with a goal to provide at least 25 percent more meals to children in need during the summer months.
