Commonly asked questions about SNAP

  • SNAP benefits come on a card like a debit card. You can use it at local stores or farmers' markets for groceries. The amount depends on your income and family size.

  • SNAP is sometimes called other names. For example, you may hear SNAP called food stamps or EBT. Some places also have a different name for SNAP, like Link or CalFresh. All these names refer to the same program - SNAP, a monthly benefit to help make food more affordable.

  • Anyone can apply. Basic eligibility depends on monthly income and expenses. Check with your local food bank or SNAP office for specific requirements in your state. There is no risk in seeing if you are eligible for SNAP.

    • Fruits and vegetables
    • Meat, fish, and poultry
    • Dairy products
    • Bread and cereals
    • Snacks and beverages
    • Seeds and plants to grow food for your family

     

    SNAP benefits cannot be used to buy:

    • Alcohol or tobacco products
    • Non-food items like pet food, cleaning supplies, household supplies like toilet paper, or hygiene items like shampoo, menstrual products, baby formula, or diapers
    • Vitamins and medicines

  • Most grocery stores, convenience stores, farmers' markets and even online delivery services accept SNAP.

What changes are coming to SNAP?

Changes to SNAP are happening over time.

Some SNAP rules are changing. Some changes will happen this year, and others will happen later.

Each state runs its own SNAP program. That means when changes happen–and what they look like–may be different depending on where you live. Some changes to SNAP are taking effect this year.

No matter what changes come, the Feeding America network is here to help connect you with food, answer questions and support communities.

  • Many people will still qualify for SNAP.  

    Some people may need to meet new rules or take extra steps to keep getting benefits.

    If you get SNAP now, make sure you:

    • Read any letters or notices from your local SNAP office.
    • Respond if your SNAP office asks for information or documents.
    • Keep your mailing address and other contact information up to date.

  • Some adults may have to meet new work requirements to keep getting SNAP benefits.

    Dending on your situation, you may need to take part in one of these for 20 hours per week:

    • Working
    • Volunteering
    • Approved job training

    These rules don’t apply to everyone. This may include people with disabilities, caregivers and others, depending on your situation.

    SNAP is a federal program, but each state manages its own program and makes decisions about how that program runs.  

    That means:

    • Some states may make changes sooner than others.
    • The rules and available support may be different in every state.
