Bill Thomas is Chief Supply Chain Officer for Feeding America. In this role, he leads the organization’s efforts to secure food and grocery product, from 4 primary streams (Manufacturing, Retail, Produce and Purchasing. A member of Feeding America’s Executive Leadership Team, Thomas oversees and advances the functional areas of Product Sourcing, Customer Service, Transportation and Disaster Services.
In 2008, Thomas joined Feeding America as Vice President of Product Development. Under his leadership, Feeding America’s partnerships with retailers, including Food Lion, Kroger, SuperValu and Wal*Mart, spurred tremendous growth in the national Retail Store Donation Program, which has become a vital source of nutritious food for families who struggle with hunger. Since fiscal year 2009, the number of stores participating in the program increased from 3,200 to more than 10,000, while pounds have grown from 198 million to over 500 million pounds. In addition, both the Produce and Purchasing programs have seen record growth, working to supplement the members’ efforts in these two key growth areas.
Prior to joining Feeding America, Thomas spent 10 years with Barilla America serving as Director of Planning, Purchasing and Co-Packers. He improved speed to market capability for new products, which resulted in more than 30 new item introductions in three years – doubling the business in size.
Before Barilla America, Thomas spent 19 years with the Quaker Oats Company where he held a number of management positions from marketing to planning to operations. Notably, he served as Supply Chain Leader of Ready-To-Eat Cereals. Thomas identified and implemented capacity expansion work that allowed Quaker Bagged Cereals to expand 0.9 percent to a 1.5 percent share of the Ready-To-Eat Cereals category.
Thomas also held the position of Marketing Manager of Cycle dog food at the Quaker Oats Company where he was responsible for development and implementation of marketing programs for a $200 million portfolio of pet food business. Additionally, he increased profits on Cycle canned dog food by $1.5 million by instituting an everyday low pricing strategy, which capitalized on key pricing category research.
Thomas earned a master’s degree in marketing from Loyola University and a bachelor’s degree in general management from Purdue University.
