Position Description

To secure, develop and maintain various sources of funding for the Food Bank from corporations and foundations as well as city, county, state and federal government entities for the purpose of funding operating, equipment and capital needs of the Golden Harvest Food Bank and its mission.

Job Responsibilities

  • Acquire and maintain sound knowledge and understanding of the GHFB, and use that knowledge and understanding to better comprehend all projects and programs for which grants will be sought and to recommend the seeking of grants.
  • Research grant-making organizations and analyze them to identify likely funding sources for specific projects and programs.
  • Develop a grant proposal calendar to effectively track grant proposal deadlines, submissions and award dates.
  • Conduct the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundation, corporate and governmental sources.
  • Prepare proposals and grant applications, and resubmissions, and perform responsible professional and administrative work in researching, identifying, developing and responding to public and private grant opportunities to benefit the GHFB.
  • Compile, write, and edit all grant applications exhibiting strong expository writing skills and a high-level command of grammar and spelling.
  • Develop individual grant proposals in accordance with each grant-making organization’s preferences and follow exactly each grant-making organization’s guidelines.
  • Arrange pre-grant application meetings with appropriate team members to determine cost/benefits, timelines, responsibilities, criteria and application process.
  • Review the budget of a project or program for which funding is sought and make recommendations to better present it to grant-making organizations; work with the Executive Director, Associate Director and Business Manager to develop and manage grant budgets.
  • Keep in contact with grant-making organizations during their review of a submitted grant application in order to be able to supply additional supportive material.
  • Work with Public Information Coordinator to ensure press release coverage on grants received.
  • Maintain current records in database and in paper files, including grant tracking, monitoring and reporting.
  • Maintain and complete all necessary reports, in conjunction with other necessary staff, to assure grant compliance. 
  • Manage the process of supplying progress reports, when required, by the grant-making organization.
  • Ensure grant compliance and donor reporting.
  • Track and maintain pertinent statistical information related to grants and GHFB operations.
  • Prepare and submit reports on all grant activities to Executive Director.
  • Develop and maintain an annual portfolio of successful grants totaling $1,000,000 or more.
  • Assist with other fundraising projects and duties, as assigned.

Application Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or have worked in related discipline with a minimum of three years of related experience and a proven track record in grant writing and program development. Candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be proficient in research, interpreting, and analyzing diverse data and possess the ability to work collaboratively and independently to achieve stated goals.

  • Knowledge of granting agency requirements.
  • Knowledge of member governments’ projects, programs, and service needs.
  • Knowledge of relevant state and federal laws.
  • Knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with research techniques for fundraising prospect research.
  • Skill in grant proposal writing.
  • Skill in grant research methodologies.
  • Skill in identifying funding sources.
  • Skill in compiling information and preparing reports.
  • Skill in operating office equipment such as a computer, calculator, copier, and facsimile machine.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals.
  • Skill in editing.
  • Skill and attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a group.
  • Ability to demonstrate concern for the poor and needy.
