Nevada
Up until four years ago, when Lilia lost her husband of 32 years, she spent her entire life working and living comfortably—never having to worry about how she was going to find her next meal. But when her husband passed away, Lilia soon found herself in need of food assistance for the first time.
Living solely on her pension, Lilia moved into an assisted housing complex for seniors. It was there that she began to receive food once a month through the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) in partnership with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, which collaborate to distribute food to seniors living in her housing complex.
Through the CSFP program and the food bank, Lilia is able to enjoy cereal, spaghetti, tomato sauce, chicken, beef, fruit and vegetables—which amounts to more than $50 of groceries. “I use all the food they provide,” explains Lilia. “It really helps me, and it is a really good program for seniors.”
Not a day goes by that Lilia does not think about her husband. At age 80, she is thankful for her health and tries to keep busy by walking for miles at a time every morning. She also enjoys croquet, sewing, swimming and volunteering at her local veteran hospital.
