About Greater Chicago Food Depository
The Greater Chicago Food Depository, Chicago’s food bank, is a nonprofit food distribution and training center providing food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community. The Food Depository distributes donated and purchased food through a network of 600 pantries, soup kitchens and shelters to 500,000 adults and children in Cook County every year. Last year, the Food Depository distributed 46 million pounds of nonperishable food and fresh produce, dairy products and meat, the equivalent of 95,000 meals every day. The Food Depository’s programs and services for children, older adults and the unemployed and underemployed address the root causes of hunger. Position Description
Serves as primary liaison between member agencies and the Greater Chicago Food Depository for assigned agencies. Provides technical assistance and training to member agencies to assist them in improving their organizational capacity. Manages agency services and special projects.
Job Responsibilities
1. Caseload Management: Manage a caseload member agencies, serving as the primary point of contact between the GCFD and its members.
- Conduct site visits for new agencies, encouraging the development of model agencies according to quality standards established by the GCFD.
- Communicate regularly with agencies about GCFD programs and services and encourage participation for all eligible agencies.
- Assist agencies in resolving internal GCFD issues related to credit limits, overrides, ordering and inventory, and agency billing.
- Assess and monitor agency status and capacity on an ongoing basis through site visits, phone and email contact, and review of internal data and reports.
- Act as a resource to agencies, linking members with resources and services.
- Maintain consistent, professional contact with agencies; adhere to professional and ethical guidelines in all client interactions.
2. Technical Assistance and Training: Promote the ongoing development of member agencies through technical assistance and training.
- Assess agency capacity on an ongoing basis
- Provide ongoing instruction and technical assistance in the areas of reporting requirements, general food program operations, volunteer recruitment and retention, transportation, and food safety.
- Undertake annual planning/goal setting activities to enhance their operational capacity.
- Encourage agencies to use GCFD programs, services, and resources to meet their annual goals.
- Refer agency clients and volunteers to appropriate Pantry University courses.
- Communicate regularly with Pantry University staff on the training, development, and TA needs of member agencies; identify topics for new courses; identify opportunities for specialized onsite training opportunities and assist Pantry University in the implementation of those programs.
- Develop social service networks in key communities.
- Recommend and implement the translation of materials into other languages as appropriate.
3. Interdepartmental Referrals: Work collaboratively with Agency Representatives to ensure compliance with routine reporting requirements and general agency operations. Follow-up on referrals received from Agency Representatives. Assist agencies as necessary in correcting site visit findings.
4. Agency Services: Manage Agency Relations services as assigned, including planning, budgeting, implementation, evaluation, and coordination with other organizations and GCFD departments for assigned services/programs. Ensure regular communication with AR team and AR Director on status and issues as they arise. Assist in the planning, monitoring, and analysis of agency services and plan new services that address demonstrated agency needs, in accordance with departmental priorities.
5. Agency Networks: Assist member agencies in the development of geographical networks for the purpose of addressing client and program needs. Promote the establishment of community leadership. Foster the development of a forum to share information and resources among member agencies in specific communities/areas to build individual and community capacity, increase food distribution, and enhance client access to food and services. Engage Pantry University in network discussion on training/technical assistance in the community.
6. Special Projects: Manage special projects as assigned by AR Director. Projects may include: assistance on annual agency conference; coordinator of evaluation data for grant reports; coordination of Hunger Walk outreach/mailing; assisting with agency awards or grant applications process; other projects as assigned.
7. Agency Relations Department: Assist the Agency Relations Director in planning and managing the Department budget and development and implementation of a strategic plan that serves the organization’s short and long-term goals. Supervise student interns. Assist in USDA review and coordinate activity with government programs.
8. Maintain a turnover file for area of responsibility.
9. Other duties as assigned.
Application Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 1+ years of social service and/or program management experience preferred.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal required.
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills required.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required.
- Proficiency in MS Office – Word, Excel, Access, Outlook.
- Ability to work independently and maintain timely schedule with minimal supervision required.
- Must have access to working vehicle with valid insurance and possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License.
- Must attain Food Handlers License upon employment
