William “Bill” McGowan became the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Feeding America (formerly named America’s Second Harvest – The Nation’s Food Bank Network) on July 23rd, 2007.
McGowan’s principle responsibilities include assessing the effectiveness of the Feeding America business functions that support the organization’s mission and vision; working hand in hand with member organizations and their senior executives—including food bank directors—to help them identify their respective needs; and providing standardized direction to operating units on how to best achieve targets.
McGowan has an extensive background in logistics, supply chain management, and strategic planning in the food manufacturing and retail businesses. He most recently worked as the President and COO at Flying Food Group, a private fresh food manufacturer, where he headed the senior leadership team that oversaw the company’s $245 million operations and 2,800 employees.
Under McGowan’s leadership, Flying Food Group increased its revenue by $88 million, acquired two companies, built two new production facilities, and restructured its manufacturing organization. He developed a strategic relationship with Starbucks resulting in a three-year contract valued at more than $117 million.
Before his tenure at Flying Food Group, McGowan worked at Barilla America and Field Container Corporation. He began his career at Quaker Oats, where he spent 20 years in a variety of supply and general management positions.
A native of Chicago, McGowan holds a bachelor’s degree from North Park College, where he graduated magna cum laude, and a master’s degree in business administration from DePaul University.
